1:35 Soviet tank officer in sheepskin coat No.1

The figure

The figure captures a Soviet tank officer in a sheepskin coat, that is in a winter coat with sheep's wool. The number in the name tells the individual items apart within a line in which several figures in similar dress are released. An adult figure measures about five centimeters in 1:35, so the bulk of the coat, the footwear and the bearing of the body all stand out on it.

Why it suits a winter scene

A sheepskin coat is a rewarding material for a modeler. It has a rough, shaggy surface that behaves differently from the smooth broadcloth of a uniform, and so shading and a dry brush both stand out on it. Beside the hard surfaces of armor it looks soft, and the scene thereby gains a contrast that the vehicle alone can never offer. A figure at a tank also gives the model scale: a viewer sees at once how tall the machine standing beside it really is, and the scene stops being just a model on display.

Preparation and painting

• Cut the excess material off a little way from the part with a sharp blade and sand the face carefully.
• Try the fit dry, especially with the head and the hands, where even a small deviation changes the stance.
• Before painting, wash the figure in lukewarm water with dish soap and let it dry.
• Bring the shaggy surface of the coat out with a dark glaze and then with a light dry brush.
• Paint the head and the hands separately and attach them only at the end.
• A glue suitable for the material used is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
