About product

1:35 M3 Grant — mantlet of the M2 gun mount with a cover (PANZER ART)

The set is not a tank kit but a replacement for the front part of the sponson mount of the American M3 medium tank. It holds a turned barrel of the 75 mm M2 gun and the mantlet, or shield, of the mount in the version with a dust cover, that is with a canvas sleeve over the moving mounting of the weapon. That is exactly what tells this variant apart, as the sister set from the same manufacturer offers the mount without a cover.

What you gain — the turned barrel has an exactly round section and a drilled muzzle, so gluing and sanding a lengthwise joint are avoided. The mantlet also replaces a plastic part whose softly molded surface tends to be the weakest point of the build on older molds.

The real subject

The M3 was an American medium tank built from 1941 as a stopgap until a design with a 75 mm gun in a fully rotating turret matured. The main weapon therefore sat in the right hull sponson with limited traverse, while the rotating turret held a weaker 37 mm gun. The name Grant was carried by the British version with a modified turret; the machines served above all in North Africa. Early examples were given the shorter M2 gun with a counterweight on the muzzle, and only later production the longer M3, so this set matches the older, shorter weapon.

Building and painting tips

First remove the casting blocks, sand the surface by which the mantlet seats into the hull flat and check it dry against the plastic part. Use super glue (cyanoacrylate) only. Before painting, wash the parts, degrease them and spray on primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface. Give the canvas cover of the mount a slightly different tone from the metal and bring out its folds with a lighter dry brush; dust the muzzle and the area around the mount with pigments, as a desert finish suits the subject very well.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building an M3 Grant in 1:35 scale
  • Those who want the variant of the mount with a dust cover
  • Builders bothered by the joint left after gluing a plastic barrel
  • Advanced modelers used to super glue and to sanding mating surfaces

This is an accessory to a plastic model, not a kit in its own right. It is supplied unpainted; the base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a detail accessory, that is a turned barrel and the mantlet of the mount, for finishing a plastic M3 model in 1:35 scale. The vehicle has to be obtained separately.

This variant captures the mount with a dust cover over the mounting of the weapon. The sister set from the same manufacturer offers the version without that cover.

The 75 mm M2 gun in the hull sponson. The 37 mm turret weapon is a different part and this set does not concern it.

Use super glue, as ordinary plastic cement does not hold. Degrease the parts before painting and use a primer.
