About product

1:35 M3 Grant and Lee — mantlet of the M2 gun mount (PANZER ART)

The set replaces the front part of the sponson mount of the American M3 medium tank and is usable both for the British Grant and for the American Lee, as the two versions differed mainly in the turret while the mounting of the 75 mm gun in the hull was the same. The package holds a turned barrel of the M2 gun and the matching mantlet, or shield, of the mount in the bare version, that is without a canvas dust cover; that one is offered by the sister set from the same manufacturer.

What it brings to the build — the turned barrel has an exactly round section and a drilled muzzle, so gluing halves, filling and laborious sanding of a lengthwise joint are avoided. The mantlet at the same time sharpens the shape of a part that tends to be softly molded on older molds.

The real subject

The M3 came about in 1941 as a stopgap for the time until a tank with a 75 mm gun in a fully rotating turret was ready. The main weapon therefore sat in the right hull sponson with limited traverse, and the turret carried only a 37 mm gun. The British took the Grant version with a different turret, while American units used the Lee. Early machines had the shorter M2 gun with a counterweight on the muzzle, and later ones were given the longer M3. This set matches the older, shorter weapon.

Building and painting tips

Remove the casting blocks, sand the mating surface of the mantlet flat and try it dry against the plastic hull part. It is bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate). Before painting, wash the parts, degrease them and spray on primer, because without it the paint cracks on the smooth surface. Darken the muzzle and add traces of soot, bring out the gaps around the mount with a wash and lay dust pigments on the lower areas; a desert finish suits the subject best.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building an M3 Grant or Lee in 1:35 scale
  • Those who want the mount in the bare version without a dust cover
  • Builders bothered by the joint left after gluing a plastic barrel
  • More experienced modelers used to super glue and to sanding mating surfaces

This is an accessory to a plastic model, not a kit in its own right. It is supplied unpainted; the base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a detail accessory, that is a turned barrel and the mantlet of the mount, meant for finishing a plastic M3 model in 1:35 scale.

Yes, the two versions differed above all in the turret, while the mounting of the 75 mm gun in the hull sponson was the same. That is why the set is given for both names.

This variant captures the mount without a canvas cover. The version with a cover is offered by the sister set from the same manufacturer.

Super glue (cyanoacrylate). Plastic cement does not work on turned or resin parts.
