A set of resin wheels for a model of the launch vehicle of the Soviet 9K714 tactical missile system, which in Western terminology is given under the designation SS-23 Spider. It is not a kit of the vehicle but a detail accessory to a finished model in 1:35 scale. The castings replace the plastic wheels from the box, have a sharper tread and a clean outline of the tread with no mold parting line.
The 9K714 system belonged among the Soviet tactical missile systems of the ground forces and its launcher was carried on a large multi-axle amphibious wheeled chassis. It is precisely the chassis that gives the vehicle its characteristic silhouette: a long floating hull and a row of large wheels with independent suspension and a tire pressure control system. For a modeler this means that the wheels make up a substantial part of what is visible on a finished build, and the way they are made markedly affects the final impression — all the more so because on a multi-axle vehicle any inaccuracy repeats itself on every axle.
Wash the wheels in lukewarm water with dish soap, cut the casting blocks off with a fine-bladed saw and level the surface with a file so that the round outline is kept. Sand with your airways protected, glue with super glue and apply a primer before painting. Do not paint the tires pure black — a gray-black base reads more convincingly. Spray the discs separately, pull the transition between disc and rubber down with a dark wash and knock the gloss back with a matte varnish. On a multi-axle vehicle make sure the degree of dusting and the mud effects are comparable on all the wheels, as otherwise the whole looks inconsistent.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
