This detailing set from the manufacturer Wolfpack is intended for a model of the F/A-18A, B, C or D Hornet in 1:48 scale and replaces the plastic exhaust nozzles of both engines. The resin castings allow a thin trailing edge and clean inner surfaces of the nozzle, which on split plastic parts are reached only by lengthy filling and sanding. The set is designed for the Hasegawa kit.
On the Hornet this detail is particularly visible, because the nozzles are mounted a short way behind the fuselage and are exposed to the view from behind. This is not a model of an aircraft, but an accessory for a kit bought separately.
The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet is a twin-engine carrier-based aircraft able to carry out fighter and attack tasks. The single-seat A and C versions and the two-seat B and D are powered by General Electric F404 engines with afterburners. The nozzles with movable petals change their cross section according to the engine setting, so on the real aircraft on the ground they are usually seen open differently than in flight. That is a detail which modelers often address when choosing the position of the nozzles on the finished model.
First wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water, so that the mold release agent is removed. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutting disc, and never break them out. Make the joints with super glue (cyanoacrylate), as a cement for plastic models will not etch resin. Carry out the sanding wet and with respiratory protection. After sanding apply a primer, and only then the paint. The Hornet's nozzles are usually built on a combination of metallic shades with warmer transitions toward the trailing edge, and a final thin wash will bring out the division of the petals and the riveting.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The set is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
