About product

Armory 1:32 B-24 Liberator and PB4Y Privateer, type a wheels

An accessory set of replacement wheels for a large four-engine bomber in 1:32 scale. The main wheels are cast with a weighted tire effect, that is with a flattened contact patch of the kind that forms under the weight of a standing aircraft. According to the name, the set contains two types of nose wheel, a mudguard made by three-dimensional printing and photo-etched hubcaps. The combination of resin, printing and photo-etching gives finer detail than injection-molded plastic can manage, above all on the tread pattern and on the thin rims of the hubcaps. The set is one of several variants that differ from each other in the type of tire; this one carries the type a designation in its name.

The real subject

The B-24 Liberator was a four-engine bomber with a high-mounted wing of a large slender section and with nose landing gear. The naval PB4Y Privateer grew out of it but differs above all in its single vertical tail and the longer front part of the fuselage. On both machines the landing gear is a prominent element of the model, because the large wheels are clearly visible on display and their shape and seating determine how the model stands on its base.

Building and painting tips

First wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water because of the mold release residue. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife, and do not snap them. Sand the area down after cutting and protect your airways when sanding resin, best of all by sanding wet. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue); cement for plastic does not hold on resin. Flatten and degrease the photo-etched hubcaps before gluing them. Apply a primer before painting. Turn the wheels so that the flattened area sits correctly on the base.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of large bombers in 1:32 scale
  • Modelers for whom the shape and detail of the plastic wheels from the box are not enough
  • Those who want the model to stand on its base convincingly
  • More experienced modelers used to working with resin and photo-etching

This is an accessory set, not a model of the aircraft. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

The type of tire. Real machines were fitted with wheels from different suppliers with a different tread pattern, which is why the manufacturer offers several versions of the set.

The contact patch of the wheel is cast slightly flattened, the way it looks under the weight of a standing aircraft. The model then does not look as though it were floating.

Cyanoacrylate glue. Ordinary cement for plastic does not dissolve resin, so the joint does not hold.

It is not. These are replacement wheels and small landing gear accessories only.
