This item is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory wheel set in 1:48 scale from the Armory company for Supermarine Spitfire kits. The distinguishing feature is the combination of a block tread pattern and a hub with four spokes; other Spitfire wheel sets from the same manufacturer have a different pattern and a different number of spokes.
On a plastic wheel the block pattern is usually only suggested, and the parting line across the tread breaks it up as well. A resin casting keeps the pattern crisp right around the circumference and the spokes of the hub come out thin and open. The weighted tire effect matters too: the bottom of the tire is flattened the way the rubber sits under the weight of the aircraft, so the model does not stand on two points but on flat areas.
The Spitfire was a single-engine fighter with landing gear retracting outward from the wing root and with a narrow wheel track. Several types of hub alternated on it in the course of production, from fully covered to lightened with a varying number of spokes, along with several tread patterns. The combination of pattern and hub is therefore a specific recognition detail of a given machine and period, not an arbitrary decoration.
Wash the castings in warm soapy water, otherwise the mold release residue will keep the paint off. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife and level the surface with a file; sand wet or with a respirator, because resin dust should not be inhaled. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). After the primer, spray the tire dark gray, as pure black looks too harsh in scale, and paint in the spokes of the hub separately with a brush. Seat the wheel so that the flattened area sits on the ground.
The set is an accessory, not a kit of the aircraft. It is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
