About product

El Dorado, a resin bust in 1:10 (Brokentoad Resin Cast)

A collector bust in cast resin in 1:10 scale. It is not a kit in the usual sense: putting the casting together is a matter of moments, and the real work begins only with a brush in hand. Resin holds sharp edges and shallow relief better than injection-molded plastic, so the texture of skin and fabric stands out on the surface and the bust takes fine shading. The 1:10 format is rewarding for figure painting: the face is large enough for modeling the tones, and yet it can be managed in a few evenings.

Preparing the casting

First wash the parts in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent and let them dry thoroughly. The primer would not hold on remains of the release layer from the mold and the paintwork would later rub away. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife, and never snap them off. Level the parting lines and any small burrs with fine abrasive paper, fill the seam where the parts meet with modeling filler and sand it perfectly smooth. If the casting is split, try the joints dry first and only then glue them with cyanoacrylate glue. Resin is better sanded wet and with respiratory protection.

Painting: the face decides

Start with a thin coat of primer, ideally sprayed; on smooth resin that is the most reliable way to give the paint its adhesion. Build the skin up from a mid tone in heavily thinned coats: shadows into the eye sockets, under the cheekbones and into the hollow of the neck, highlights on the forehead, the bridge of the nose and the chin. Apply the reddening of the cheeks, the ears and the nose as a translucent glaze rather than an opaque patch. Paint the eyes before their surroundings: a slightly grayed white, the iris, a thin dark line around the rim, and always check the symmetry against the other eye. Bring out the textiles with a wash into the folds and highlights on the edges, and finish the metal and the leather with restrained weathering. Mount the bust on the base at the very end, so that it does not get in the way.

Who the bust is for

  • Modelers who want to move their painting of skin and faces forward
  • Collectors of figure work and exhibitors at competitions
  • More experienced builders, as working with resin differs from plastic
  • Anyone looking for a cabinet piece to work on in stages

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, primer and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is supplied as an unpainted resin casting. Putting it together is short work, and the modeler does the painting.

It calls for washing the mold release agent off, cutting off the casting blocks and a primer, and it is joined with cyanoacrylate glue. The procedure differs from plastic, but even a slightly advanced modeler will manage it.

The number of parts and the height of the bust are stated on the box. The scale is 1:10.

Most often acrylic paints for figures, and then oils for deeper shadows and transitions. Always over a coat of primer.
