A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures. It is supplied unpainted and unassembled. The work divides into a short preparation of the casting and the painting, which with figure subjects decides the whole impression.
A motorcyclist subject brings a specific combination of surfaces. The protective outer coat has a smooth, slightly glossy character that is painted differently from absorbent woolen cloth: it calls for an even base, soft transitions and a sheen concentrated on the stretched surfaces of the shoulders and the chest. The protective goggles are a rewarding focus of the bust, as the glass is built as a transition from a dark edge to a light reflection and tends to be the first thing a viewer notices. A face exposed to the wind of riding has reddened cheekbones and nose, and possibly a sharp boundary where the goggles or the headgear protected it. Take the cut of the coat and its folds purely as a painting task; the point is to build the material convincingly, not to retell the context.
Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry thoroughly, otherwise the primer will not adhere. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, fill the seams and sand them with fine paper, wet and with your airways protected. Make the joints with super glue. Apply a thin primer in misting passes. Build the skin in thinned layers and add the redness with a glaze into the cheekbones, the nose and the ears, never with a covering paint. Paint the eyes at the start. Underlay the coat with a base tone, lead the shadows into the folds with a glaze and place the highlights on the stretched surfaces; bring the sheen back only at the end, in spots with a gloss varnish. Paint the lenses of the goggles as the last of the main surfaces, so that no sanding dust gets into them. Darken the metal buckles and fittings with weathering and leave the reflection only on the edges. Keep the dusty weathering in the lower part of the bust. Leave fitting the base to the very end.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
