About product

Young Miniatures 1:10 Medieval Knight

A collector's portrait bust in 1:10 scale cast in resin. It is not a kit in the usual sense: the casting comes in several parts that only need to be aligned and glued, and all the work then moves to the brush. Busts of this format are bought precisely for the painting, because in 1:10 scale every transition of tone shows on the face.

Preparing the casting

Wash the parts first in lukewarm soapy water so that the remains of mold release agent disappear. Cut the casting blocks and gates off with a sharp knife or a fine saw, and never break them off. Run a scalpel along the mold parting lines and finish them with fine wet sandpaper, protecting your airways. Fill and sand the aligned seams again, typically between the head and the torso or where the helmet sits, so that no groove is left. The parts are bonded with cyanoacrylate super glue, as cement for plastic has no effect on resin.

Painting the face, the metal and the fabrics

Painting without a primer does not work, because resin will not otherwise take the paint evenly. A light gray or flesh primer in a thin coat is a good start and at the same time reveals the remaining sanding scratches. The face is built from a mid flesh layer toward the lit places on the forehead, the nose and the cheekbones and toward the darker transitions in the eye sockets and under the jaw. Paint the eyes only once the skin is finished, with a thin brush and preferably in two passes. The hair and the beard call for a dark base and a dry brush to pick out the strands. The metal parts of the armor can be treated with metallic paints, or painted purely optically from gray and blue-gray tones. In both cases the weathering is decisive, that is, a dark wash into the hollows, fine pigments on the contact faces and a light polishing of the edges. The fabrics and the leather, by contrast, need a matte surface and softer transitions so that they do not look flat next to the metal. Finally pin the finished bust to a base so that it can be displayed at eye level.

FAQ

It is not. It is supplied as a resin casting to assemble and paint. Paints and glue are not included in the package.

Cyanoacrylate super glue. Ordinary cement for plastic does not soften resin and the joint would not hold.

Yes. Without a primer resin will not take the paint evenly and the coat is easily rubbed off. A thin coat also reveals sanding scratches.

Count on a division at the head, the torso and the accessories, as is usual with busts in this scale. Check the exact number of parts on the box.
