About product

Young Miniatures 1:10 U-Boat Commander WWII

A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures. It is supplied unpainted and unassembled. The assembly takes a short while and all the rest of the work lies in preparing the surface and in the painting.

The sculpting and the painting task

The subject of a German submarine officer of the Second World War is defined from the painting side by three things: a face with a strong growth of beard, a leather outer garment and soft headgear. The beard is the most demanding: it cannot be painted as an area but as a glaze laid over finished skin, so that the base color of the skin keeps showing through. The leather garment has a deeper base and an irregular sheen that is built up in spots rather than over the whole surface. The cloth headgear stays matte and serves as a calm area against which the face stands out. The metal elements of the fasteners and fittings are painted at the end and work as contrasting accents. Take the cut and the make of the uniform as a painting task: what decides on the material, the seams and the folds is the final impression, not a description.

Preparation and painting tips

Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water first and let it dry thoroughly. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, fill the seams with modeling putty and sand them with fine paper; sand wet and protect your airways. Join the parts with super glue. Apply a thin primer in several misting passes. Build the skin in thinned layers from the mid value of the tone, add the highlights to the forehead, the nose and the cheekbones and the shadows into the eye sockets and under the jaw. Do the eyes right at the start and tone the white of the eye down to a grayish shade. Then lay the beard and the hair on as a glaze over the finished skin and draw them in lightly with a dry brush. Underlay the leather darkly, lighten the stretched surfaces and suggest the wear on the edges with a lighter shade of the same color. Unify the cloth with a filter. Darken the metal fittings with weathering and let only a few reflections stand out. Pin the bust to a base only once the painting is complete.

FAQ

Paint the complete skin first, including the shadows and highlights, and only then lay the beard over it as a strongly thinned glaze. The base has to show through, and the individual hairs are then only suggested with a dry brush.

Cyanoacrylate super glue. Cement for polystyrene does not soften resin and the joint would come apart.

Yes. Without a thin primer the paint holds badly on smooth resin. Apply it in several misting coats so that the fine engraving of the surface is not clogged.
