The kit captures the ambulance conversion of the German fully tracked tractor RSO 03 in 1:100 scale from the Zebranomodel range. A standard cargo version of the same vehicle exists as well — this item presents the variant with a closed body for evacuating the wounded. The make-up of the package, the number of parts and the marking options are stated on the box of the kit.
Ambulance conversions of tracked tractors arose out of practical need: on stretches where a wheeled ambulance could not reach the units, a tracked chassis was the only means of evacuating the wounded. The basis stayed the short tracked chassis of the RSO with a simplified pressed cab and an air-cooled diesel engine; in place of the open cargo bed a closed box body was set on, which protected those carried from the weather. The vehicle was slow but exceptionally capable through mud and snow, which on rear-area and supply routes counted for more than speed.
A closed body gives the model large flat areas, on which every seam and every fingerprint will tell — so spend time sanding and lay on a thin but continuous base. Glue the body on only after the chassis is painted, otherwise you will not reach the lower part. In 1:100 the medical markings are usually better suggested with a brush than with a decal: apply the white field first, let it dry thoroughly and only then add the red cross with a fine point. A magnifier and a braced hand help. The weathering should read differently on the body and on the chassis — dust and light dusting above, mud and darker tones below. Finally unify the surface with matte varnish, so that the white fields do not shine with gloss.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
