A pre-cut set of masking films for the glazing of the B-25J Mitchell bomber in 1:48 scale from Art Scale. It is neither a kit nor a finished model: it is an accessory that you buy for a model you already have under construction. The version is single-sided, so the films cover the outer surfaces of the glazing; a double-sided variant that also masks from the inside exists as well.

What the mask is for

The glazed cockpit, the gun turrets and the glazed nose of the Mitchell have a great many small frames. Cutting them out of adhesive tape by hand is slow and the edges tend to be uneven. A pre-cut mask does away with that work: the individual parts are die-cut exactly to the shape of the frame, so after spraying you are left with a straight, crisp edge and clear areas with no fogging and no fingerprints.

How to use the mask

• Lift the part off the backing with the tip of a scalpel or with tweezers and transfer it to a clean, degreased clear part.
• Press the film down along the whole length of the edge with a wooden toothpick, so that no gap is left anywhere for paint to seep through.
• Cover the remaining open areas with a piece of masking tape or with masking fluid.
• Spray several thin coats; one heavy coat will creep under the edge of the mask.
• Lift the mask shortly after the paint has dried and at a shallow angle, so that the paint does not tear at the edge.
