A plastic kit of the Fastway Mars Liner interplanetary rocket in 1:144 scale from the American brand Glencoe Models. Its name connects it with the Douglas Aircraft company, so this is a theme from the circle of period projects of space flight, not a machine that actually flew. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The space projects of the middle of the twentieth century came about on paper before technology made it possible to build them. Aircraft firms worked up studies of interplanetary ships and rockets at the time, which reached a wide public through the popular press and inspired a whole generation. The model belongs to exactly that family of themes: a slender rocket body with pronounced stabilizing fins is the typical notion of a journey to Mars from the days before real launch vehicles arrived.
The body of the rocket is long and cylindrical, so devote time to the lengthwise joint. Fill it and sand with progressively finer grits, checking the surface with a base coat as you go. Rocket models make a lot of use of a combination of white and a pronounced signal color, which makes demands on masking; sharp transitions are managed by masking tape pressed down with a fingernail and oversprayed with the base shade, so that the paint does not run underneath it. Leave the metal surfaces for the end, because metallic paints are harder to overspray and to mask. Paint the base separately, if it is part of the package.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
