About product

North American T-28B Trojan 1:144 from Miniwing

This is a kit of the T-28B Trojan trainer in the small 1:144 scale. The finished model has a span of only a few centimeters, so it fits even into a display case where there is no room for the larger scales, and it complements a collection of postwar trainers well. Check the particular contents of the package, the number of parts and the version of the cabin on the packaging.

The real subject

The Trojan came about at the turn of the 1940s and 1950s as the successor to the Texan trainer. It has all-metal construction, a radial engine and nose gear, which prepared crews for the move to jets. The T-28B version was intended for naval aviation and, compared with the basic variant, was given a more powerful powerplant. The machine stayed with training units for a number of years and in various modifications also reached further operators.

Building and painting tips

In 1:144 scale the cleanliness of the surface decides, because every trace of sanding is visible on a small area. Cut the parts off with a thin saw or a sharp cutter, sand the parting lines with fine abrasive paper and refine the joints with thin filler rather than a heavy layer of glue. You will make the work easier by spraying the fuselage and the wing with a primer, which unifies the shade of the plastic and reveals any remaining scratches. The weight of the build lies in the painting and the decals: apply thin coats of thinned paint, and deal with sharp transitions between color panels using masking tape cut into narrow strips. Varnish the area to a gloss before the decals and, once dry, unify it with a matte or semi-matte varnish.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of aircraft in 1:144 who want a coherent line of trainers
  • Modelers with experience of the small scales and fine parts
  • Anyone interested in postwar American aviation
  • Those who build for small display cases and are looking for a model with minimal demands on room

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Neither glue nor paints are included in the package.

A small scale forgives fewer mistakes in the cleanliness of the surface than 1:72 or 1:48. If you already have sanding and gluing small parts tried and tested, it will be no problem, but as a very first model we would not recommend it.

Check the exact number of parts on the packaging. With 1:144 scale the assembly tends to be simpler than in the large scales and the main work shifts to the painting and the decals.

The T-28B was the version for naval aviation with a more powerful powerplant than the basic variant. Other modifications of the Trojan came about later and differed in equipment and in purpose.
