A finished water surface without a single plant looks like glass. Water lilies are the quickest way to turn it into a pool or a pond: the round floating leaves give the area scale and break up the empty expanse. This accessory from the Model Scene brand is prepared for 1:72 and 1:87 scale, that is for the size common on model railways as well.
It belongs in ponds, pools, backwaters, flooded ditches, races and the quiet corners of canals. Water lilies grow in shallower water by the bank rather than in the middle of a deep expanse, so placing them at the edges is what makes a scene believable. On a layout they complete landscape sections with water well, where the area is otherwise without detail.
Fit them only onto a finished and fully cured water surface, never into material that is still liquid. A drop of clear PVA glue or of a gel super glue is enough to fix them, so that it does not run. In a small scale, pay attention above all to irregularity: never arrange the leaves in a row or into islands of equal size. The impression that a leaf lies on the surface is helped by a tiny drop of gloss varnish around the edge. Darken the shaded side of the water surface and leave the sunlit one lighter; here contrast replaces the detail that is lost in a small scale.
The accessory is supplied as scenic vegetation to be set into your own base. Glue, water surface material and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
