About product

Three-horse cavalry carriage for the 37 mm Bofors wz. 36 in 1:72 scale, First to Fight

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the Polish brand First to Fight. The subject of the model is the three-horse carriage used by cavalry units to move the 37 mm anti-tank gun, model 36, of Bofors licensed design. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The 37 mm anti-tank gun, model 36, was the standard anti-tank weapon of the Polish infantry and cavalry in the late 1930s. It was a licensed version of a Swedish design, a light and easily moved weapon with a split-trail carriage. It was exactly this low weight that allowed the gun to be pulled by a horse team, which in cavalry units was the standard means of transport. The three-horse team, that is a team of three horses, is one of the arrangements, which varied according to the type of unit and the terrain; the same manufacturer also makes a two-horse version. The combination of a light gun and a horse team is typical of this period and in a diorama explains well how artillery actually reached its position.

Building and painting tips

The parts in 1:72 scale are small, so have a sharp knife and tweezers ready and clean them up carefully. The harness and the straps are easier to paint before the team is finally assembled. Horse hair can be handled with a basic brown shade and oil or acrylic glazes to suggest the transitions; lighten the mane and the tail with a drybrush. Distinguish the wooden and the metal parts of the carriage by sheen as well as by shade, since matte wood next to slightly glossy metal looks natural. Earth pigments work well on the wheels and the lower areas.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers of Polish equipment of 1939 in 1:72 scale
  • Builders of dioramas with horse traction
  • Collectors of small supporting scenes for artillery
  • Anyone interested in horse teams and period logistics

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The model is the three-horse carriage for the 37 mm model 36 gun; check the contents on the box. The gun itself is a separate item.

The number of horses in the team. The arrangement varied according to the type of unit and the terrain, and the same manufacturer makes both versions.

A basic brown shade, glazes for the transitions and a drybrush on the mane and the tail work well. The difference between matte wood and slightly glossy metal on the carriage helps the scene look alive.

The parts are small in 1:72 scale and the team with its harness calls for patience. For a more experienced modeler, though, it is a shorter and rewarding build.
