The AH-64 Apache is an American two-seat attack helicopter created as anti-tank and fire support for ground forces. The crew consists of a pilot and a gunner seated in tandem. The AH-64D Longbow version is a modernization of the original Apache: its recognition feature is the characteristic radar in a spherical housing set above the main rotor head. This position lets the helicopter raise the radar above an obstacle or a terrain edge, acquire targets and stay under cover, so the Apache can watch the battlefield without exposing itself entirely. The standard armament consists of a cannon under the forward fuselage and stores on the stub wings, on which anti-tank guided missiles and pods with unguided rockets are hung. The Apache has been through a number of conflicts and is one of the most widespread attack helicopters of Western armies.
Start the build with the cockpit; in a small scale a basic dark interior shade, a wash and dry-brushed edges of the instrument panels are enough. The glazing dominates on a helicopter: glue it with a clear canopy cement so that the viewing surface does not haze, and mask the frames with thin tape. Paint the fuselage with an airbrush in thin coats so that the panel lines do not clog. Cut the rotor blades from the sprue with a margin and sand the rest off, as their narrow edges bend easily. The mast-mounted radar and the exact seating of the tail boom deserve special attention. Glue the stores and rocket pods on the stub wings on last, after varnishing and applying the decals, as the model is easier to handle that way. Finish the model with a matte varnish and light dust effects around the landing gear; wear around the engine exhausts adds realism.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
