This add-on set from Armory is made for models of the B-29 Superfortress bomber in 1:144 and matches the wheels of the early production series. A resin casting carries a finer tread and sidewall pattern than an injection mold allows on a part this small. The tire is cast with sag, that is with a flat patch where it touches the runway. The set is not an aircraft kit but a replacement part that you use during the build in place of the wheels from the box.
The B-29 Superfortress is an American four-engined bomber from the end of the Second World War, technically far more advanced than the older types, among other things thanks to its pressurized cabin and its remotely controlled defensive armament. The machine was among the heaviest aircraft of its day and its landing gear matched that. Design details changed gradually during production, so the wheels of the early and the later series are told apart; for a faithful model it is therefore sensible to choose the variant to suit the particular machine being depicted.
The parts are small in this scale, so work with tweezers over a light surface, ideally over a tray, so that a casting does not get away from you if it springs off. Cut the casting block off with a fine saw and level the cut with sandpaper; check the contact patch against a flat board before gluing, otherwise the model will stand at an angle. Wash the castings in warm water with dish soap before painting and let them dry. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue; plastic cement does not work here. Mix the tire toward dark gray rather than pure black, as pure black looks flat in a small scale. The hub is easiest to paint with a brush around the rim, and any slip can be covered with a fine line. Hint at dust on the contact patch and the sidewall with a dry brush or with pigment. Use airway protection when sanding resin.
This is an add-on to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The set is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
