About product

A vacuum-formed canopy for the DH Vampire, 1:144, Brengun

A clear cockpit canopy vacuum-formed over a mold from thin transparent film. Compared with an injected part it has a markedly smaller wall thickness, so once glued on the cockpit does not look as if it were made of spectacle lenses and the interior can be seen through it. It has no parting seam and no gate marks, and the frame of the canopy is clearly raised, so it masks well. In 1:144 scale it is a small part, but on a small model it forms one of the few views inside. The set is an accessory to the base kit, not a standalone model.

The real subject

The de Havilland Vampire was a British single-engine jet fighter of the first generation. You will recognize it at first glance by its short monocoque fuselage nacelle and the pair of tail booms, between which the horizontal tail surface is set. It came about while the Second World War was still on and in the postwar years it became one of the most widespread jet aircraft, flying in many countries and in a number of versions, including trainers and carrier types. It is precisely the large glazed canopy over a fairly small fuselage that is characteristic of its appearance.

Building and painting tips

A vacuum-formed part is not broken out but cut out. First mark the outline with a thin marker, then run a new scalpel blade around the perimeter several times and carefully break the part out of the film. Sand the excess on fine sandpaper laid on a flat board until the edge seats exactly on the fuselage. Scratches from sanding are removed with polishing paste or with sanding sponges of progressively finer grit. It is bonded with a colorless PVA glue for canopies, which dries clear and does not fog the plastic, whereas super glue here risks whitening. Mask the frames with narrow tape and spray thinly.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders in the small 1:144 scale who want a clear view into the cockpit
  • Modelers bothered by a thick and dull clear part from the box
  • Those who want to keep a spare canopy in case the original gets scratched
  • More experienced modelers who are ready to cut out vacuum-formed parts

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base kit. Glue, paints and masking material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is formed from thin film, so it has a markedly smaller wall thickness, is more transparent and has no parting seam. In return, though, it has to be cut out and sanded by hand.

Run a new scalpel blade around the outline in several light passes, never in one heavy cut. Then sand the remaining film on fine sandpaper on a flat surface.

A colorless PVA glue intended for clear parts. It dries clear and does not fog the surface, unlike super glue.

No. It is only a replacement clear part, and the base kit of the aircraft has to be bought separately.
