About product

DHC-6 Twin Otter In Civilian Skies in 1:144 scale by Mark I

An injection-molded plastic kit of the legendary Canadian turboprop in the collector's scale of 1:144. Mark I is a Czech manufacturer that has long specialized in this scale and issues the Twin Otter in several boxes differing in the choice of markings; this one carries the name In Civilian Skies and aims at civilian operation. The particular contents of the package and the range of decal schemes are given on the box.

The real subject

The De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter is a twin-engined turboprop designed for short takeoff and landing. It first flew in 1965 and is powered by Pratt and Whitney Canada turboprop engines of the PT6A series. A high-set wing, fixed landing gear and a simple, robust structure made it a machine for regional routes, island connections, supplying remote areas and operation from short unpaved surfaces. Besides wheels, skis and floats are used as well. In civilian service it flies all over the world to this day and ranks among the most widespread utility aircraft of its class.

Building and painting tips

The 1:144 scale means small parts and a short build, but no tolerance for careless cleaning up. Use a thin liquid cement for plastic, a sharp new knife and fine sandpaper on the seams of the fuselage and the nacelles. Mask the cockpit glazing and the fuselage windows before spraying. Lay the base down with a primer and the paint with an airbrush in thin coats; civilian schemes tend to be built on large light areas, which reveal every unevenness. Spray a gloss varnish under the decals and, once it has dried, draw the surface together with a matte or semi-gloss varnish. Glue the propellers and the small antennas on right at the end.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of civil aviation and regional carriers in 1:144 scale
  • Modelers who want a good build with no demands on a large display case
  • Anyone interested in Canadian aircraft and in machines for short takeoff and landing
  • Builders who are putting together a series of Twin Otters in various schemes

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is 1:144 scale and the manufacturer is the Czech brand Mark I, which specializes in this scale.

It differs in its name and in the focus of the choice of markings; this one carries the title In Civilian Skies and aims at civilian operation. The manufacturer also issues further boxes of the same aircraft with a different focus.

The build is short, but the parts in 1:144 are small. A less experienced modeler will manage it, as long as he works with a sharp knife and a thin cement for plastic and does not rush the cleaning up of the seams.

The Twin Otter is powered by Pratt and Whitney Canada turboprop engines of the PT6A series.
