The Dornier Do 17 was one of the German twin-engine bombers of the 1930s and its slender fuselage earned it the nickname the flying pencil. Against the earlier machines the Z version received a rebuilt nose with extensive glazing and a ventral gondola, so the crew of four sat together. A pair of air-cooled radial engines provided the power. The Z-2 standard served as a bomber, while the Z-3 carried photographic equipment for reconnaissance duties.
A kit in 1:144 scale to be glued and painted. The span of the Do 17 is close to eighteen meters, so the finished model measures roughly twelve and a half centimeters across the wings and takes up little room on a shelf. The number of parts and the marking options offered are given in the maker's instructions.
A small scale forgives less than it seems. Fill and sand the joints of the fuselage and the leading edges, because at this size every irregularity shows at once. Mask the cockpit glazing before spraying and take the mask off only once the paint has dried. Apply the paint in thin coats so that the fine engraving is not clogged. A wash darker than the base shade settles a shadow into the panel lines, but on a model this small use it sparingly, or the model will go gray.
Paints, glue and modeling tools are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
