The Dornier Do 17 was a German twin-engine bomber of the Second World War. Its unusually slim fuselage earned it the nickname the flying pencil. The Z version differs from the earlier marks in a reworked forward fuselage with a glazed nose and a larger crew compartment, and it was powered by radial engines. The Do 17Z-2 was a bomber, while the Do 17Z-3 served for reconnaissance with photographic equipment. Aircraft of this series appeared over Poland, France and Britain, and later moved to night and auxiliary duties.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. In 1:144 scale the span of the finished aircraft works out at roughly twelve and a half centimeters, so it fits even a smaller display case and sits well alongside other machines of the same size. The small scale shortens the build, but it also means tiny parts that are easier to handle with tweezers.
Clean the excess material off the parts before gluing and sand the marks from manufacture smooth with fine sandpaper. The glazed nose is the most conspicuous feature of this type, so it pays to mask it and spray it together with the fuselage so that the frames line up; masking has to be done before spraying, not after the paint has dried. A base coat unifies the surface and reveals the spots that still need sanding. Given the size of the model, use thinner coats of paint so that the surface relief does not disappear. If you are going to apply decals, level the surface with a gloss coat.
For collectors of small scales, for modelers who build Second World War aircraft in one size side by side, and for those who want a faster build without long fiddling over details. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
