About product

GBU-12 bombs in 1:144 scale from Rise144models

The set contains laser-guided GBU-12 bombs in 1:144 scale as a standalone accessory of underwing armament. It is not a model of an aircraft but parts with which you fit the racks of an already built model. It is precisely the armament that decides whether a model looks like a particular machine on a particular mission; and in 1:144 scale the plastic armament from a kit tends to be only suggested and without detail.

The real subject

The GBU-12 is a laser-guided bomb of the Paveway II family based on a conventional bomb of the 500-pound class. At the front it has a guidance head with a seeker for the reflected laser beam and canard surfaces, at the rear folding fins that extend its glide range after release. The target is illuminated either by the launch aircraft with its own targeting pod or by another aircraft or a ground controller. The bomb has been in service with a number of air forces for decades and is carried by machines from the F-16 through the Harrier to the Rafale, so the set will find a use on a wide range of models.

Building and painting tips

The parts are very small, so work over a surface with a raised edge and use tweezers with a gentle grip. Separate them from the casting block with a sharp knife or a fine-toothed saw, never by breaking them off. Limit sanding to the necessary minimum, because on a bomb a few millimeters long the shape is worn away before you notice. Wash the castings in soapy water before painting and spray them with a thin coat of primer. Dose the super glue with the tip of a toothpick. A practical approach is to paint the bombs while still on the block and to cut them off only before fitting them to the rack.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of contemporary combat aircraft in 1:144 scale
  • Modelers for whom the suggested armament from a kit is not enough
  • Collectors who want to unify the armament across a collection
  • More experienced modelers used to small resin parts

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
