About product

Hawker-Siddeley HS.748 and BAe 748 in civil guise, 1:144 scale

An injection-molded plastic kit of a British regional airliner in 1:144 scale, the standard in which airliners are collected most often. The manufacturer is the Czech company Mark I Models. The double designation in the name reflects a change of owner of the manufacturer, not two different types of aircraft. The boxing focuses on civil color schemes. Check the package contents and the number of marking schemes on the box.

The real subject

The Type 748 was created as a twin-engine turboprop regional airliner with a high-set tail, rugged landing gear and the ability to operate from short and unpaved runways. It was powered by Rolls-Royce Dart turboprop engines. It was originally a project of the Avro company; after it was taken into the Hawker Siddeley group it carried the designation HS.748, and after British Aerospace came into being it became the BAe 748. That is exactly why you will come across all three names for the same aircraft in the literature and in operating documents. Thanks to its modest demands on airfield quality, the type found use with regional carriers all over the world, and many machines flew long after production ended.

Building and painting tips

An airliner in a civil finish is a different discipline from a camouflaged military machine. What decides is a smooth, flawless surface, because a gloss finish accentuates every scratch and every joint that has not been sanded enough. Fill the fuselage joints, sand them down with progressively finer grits and finally polish them. A white base under the color stripes will make sure the shades are saturated and uniform. Apply the gloss varnish in thin coats, so that it does not run down the long surfaces of the fuselage. Apply the extensive decals of civil schemes on a fully cured gloss surface, one piece at a time and with plenty of decal softener, so that they settle on the rounded fuselage without creases.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of civil airliners in 1:144 scale
  • Anyone interested in British post-war transport aircraft
  • Modelers who like working with gloss finishes and extensive decals
  • Builders looking for a less usual type for a display case among jet aircraft

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No, it is the same type. It was originally an Avro project; after it was taken into the Hawker Siddeley group it became the HS.748, and after British Aerospace came into being the BAe 748.

The color stripes of civil schemes cover more evenly over a white base and the shade stays saturated. Straight onto gray plastic they would look uneven.

Onto a fully cured gloss varnish, one piece at a time and with plenty of decal softener. The decal then settles without creases, especially where the fuselage changes shape.
