About product

1:144 Horten Ho-229A — a plastic kit from the manufacturer Brengun

The kit captures one of the most unusual aircraft of the closing stage of the Second World War in the small collector's scale 1:144. It is an injection-molded plastic model supplemented with decals. The small scale means a low number of parts and a quick build, but at the same time the need to work cleanly — on an aircraft with no fuselage and no tail surfaces every unevenness on the wing joints shows. The finished model takes up little room in a display case and works well in a comparative collection of jet aircraft.

The real subject

The Horten Ho 229 was a German experimental tailless aircraft of flying wing layout powered by two Junkers Jumo 004 jet engines, developed by the Horten brothers in the last phase of the war. The structure combined a welded steel frame with wooden covering and was intended to join high speed with great range. The prototype with jet power flew at the beginning of 1945; the machine did not reach series production and the program was handed over to the Gotha firm, from where the designation Go 229 also comes. The surviving example became one of the most discussed aviation technical artifacts of the time.

Building and painting tips

Try the wing joints dry first and fill any gaps with filler, then sand and polish them once dry — on a large continuous surface every trace shows. The canopy is small, so it pays to mask it with tape cut into strips a millimeter wide. Paint with an airbrush in thin layers; apply a gloss coat under the decals, so that no silvery film arises, and unify the surface in the end with matte clear. Given the wooden covering of the real subject, fine differences of shade between the surfaces look natural, not a perfectly uniform finish.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of aircraft in 1:144 scale, where a whole collection fits into a display case
  • Anyone interested in experimental and prototype machines of the closing stage of the Second World War
  • Modelers who want a quick project for a few evenings
  • Builders of comparative sets of early jet aircraft

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes, it is an injection-molded plastic model with decals. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

Thanks to the 1:144 scale the number of parts is low, so the build is quick. What is more demanding is cleaning up the joints on the large area of the wing and masking the small canopy.

Best with an airbrush in thin layers. A gloss coat is applied under the decals and the surface is unified in the end with matte clear.

Decals are included in the package.
