A set of photo-etched metal parts for a model of the Soviet Lavochkin La-5 fighter in 1:144 scale. It is cut for one particular kit, the Kovozavody Prostejov one, and is bought to go with a base model. It is not a kit and you cannot build a finished aircraft from it, but it takes a built model a long way forward.
The Lavochkin La-5 is a Soviet single-seat fighter from the Second World War. It came about by reworking the earlier LaGG-3 design, whose V12 engine was replaced by an air-cooled radial. That change gave the aircraft substantially more power and at the same time a new, wide and characteristically shaped nose with cooling flaps around the cowling. It is precisely the flaps, the grilles and other thin features that are always a compromise in injected plastic in a small scale.
A model a few centimeters long will not take coarse detail, but at the same time every refinement shows immediately, because the model is looked at from close up. Photo-etched parts therefore pay off where the material should be visibly thin or pierced: in the cockpit area, on surfaces with openings and on the edges of covers. The work calls for a small scalpel, sharp tweezers and good light. Cut the parts off on a hard surface, make the bends in a bending tool or between two razor blades and bond with super glue in minute drops. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and apply a thin primer, otherwise the finish will not hold. Spray the paint in thin coats so that the etching that photo-etched parts are bought for is not filled in.
This is an accessory to a model, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
