The kit deals with the carrier dive bomber Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless in 1:144 scale and in a box focused on the Atlantic theater. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The small scale means a low number of parts and a quick build, but at the same time it calls for tweezers, a sharp knife and a steady hand, because the individual parts really are tiny.
The Douglas SBD Dauntless was the main carrier dive bomber of the US Navy in the first half of the war in the Pacific and became famous for the accuracy of its attacks. Characteristic of it are the perforated dive brakes on the trailing edge of the wing, which damped the speed in a dive and reduced buffeting, the two-seat cockpit with an observer and gunner at the rear and the fixed undercarriage retracted into the wing. The SBD-5 version received a more powerful radial engine and modified cockpit equipment. Besides the Pacific, Dauntlesses also flew over the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, where they operated from decks as well as from land bases and carried different, darker finishes from the machines of the Pacific groups.
Try the parts dry first, as at this scale every bit of play shows on the silhouette. Choose the glue according to the material: thin modeling cement on polystyrene, super glue on resin parts. Glue the canopy with clear cement for glazing that does not fog the plastic, and mask it before spraying. Thin the paint more than in large scales and spray in thin coats, otherwise the fine engraving will disappear. Apply the decals onto a gloss finish and use a decal softener, as small markings otherwise settle crookedly. Keep the weathering in check: in 1:144 scale it is enough to suggest shadows and chipping, as a heavy wash would make the model look dirty.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
