This item is a resin accessory set from the Aires brand, not an aircraft kit. It replaces the cockpit interior on a model of the Harrier in the AV-8A, or AV-8S, version in 1:48 scale. On a 1:48 model the cockpit is clearly visible under the clear canopy, and the depth of detail a resin casting can manage is on another level than injection-molded plastic — fine panel edges, shaped side walls and raised controls.
The Harrier is a single-seat aircraft with vertical and short takeoff and with rotating vectored-thrust nozzles. The AV-8A version served with the US Marine Corps, and the export single-seat AV-8S machines delivered to Spain carried the local designation VA.1 Matador with the Spanish Navy. These were early, that is so-called first generation Harriers derived from the British predecessor; the later AV-8B Harrier II has a different airframe and a different cockpit, so the sets cannot be interchanged.
Resin cockpits should always be tried in the fuselage dry, before gluing — the tub usually needs sanding down at the bottom and along the sides so that nothing presses once the fuselage halves are joined. Wash the parts in warm water with a drop of detergent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and true the surfaces up on abrasive paper laid on glass. It is bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate). Painting the cockpit is easier before it goes in: a primer, the covering interior shade, a dark wash into the recesses and dry-brushing along the edges. Add a drop of gloss varnish to the instrument panels so that the dials look glazed.
This is an accessory for a kit, not a stand-alone model. The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted; paints, glue and the base kit are not included in the package.
