The real subject

The TS-11 Iskra is a two-seat jet trainer of Polish design which first flew at the start of the 1960s and became the basic machine for training the pilots of the Polish Air Force for decades. It was powered by a jet engine of domestic design from the SO series, in a more powerful form on the later batches. Characteristic features are the arrangement of the rear end with the jet outlet beneath the boom carrying the tail surfaces, the tandem arrangement of the cockpits with a good view for the instructor and the sturdy landing gear for operating from less prepared strips. The machine also served in a training and combat role, and an aerobatic team flew it, thanks to which a number of striking finishes exist.

Building and painting tips

On a two-seat trainer the cockpit is clearly visible, so it pays to give time to the seats, the panels and the belts and to finish the interior before closing the fuselage up. With a jet aircraft, do not forget the nose weight, otherwise the model will sit down on its tail. Blacken the intake ducts and the jet pipe, or add a bulkhead, so that there is no seeing through the fuselage. Mask the glazing and use glue for clear plastic, which does not fog the surface. Unify the base with primer, spray gloss varnish under the decals and finally matte the surface down to the degree of sheen you want.
