1:16 Sd.Kfz. 2 Kettenkraftrad Typ HK 101 from Freedom Model Kits captures the German half-track tractor in the rendition captured by the American army. The large scale allows details to be worked out that elsewhere disappear.
Responsibility details are not available.
A plastic kit of the Sd.Kfz. 2 half-track tractor in the version the machines received after being captured by units of the United States. The package combines injection-molded plastic with photo-etched parts and offers workable tracks, so that the running gear is not merely suggested. The Freedom Model Kits brand issued this variant as a separate package derived from its basic German rendition.
The Kettenkrad arose as a light tractor joining the front fork of a motorcycle with a tracked chassis. It was driven by an automotive four-cylinder engine and proved itself where an ordinary vehicle got stuck: towing light guns, laying out cable or moving aircraft about airfield surfaces. Captured pieces went on serving with Allied units, which used them mainly as brisk help with supply.
The running gear takes the most work. Assemble the track links and fit them before you finish the fenders, otherwise they will be hard to get at. Paint and weather the engine section before closing the hull up. In 1:16 scale a graduated finish looks good: brighten the base color on the horizontal surfaces and bring the gaps out with a dark wash. Apply mud and dust from the bottom upward, so that the transition comes across naturally.
The box contains parts for building; a finished machine arises from it only after the gluing and the spraying, which the modeler sees to.
