Large-scale tanks in 1:16 and 1:18
These sizes rest on Second World War legends, from light reconnaissance machines through Tigers and tank destroyers to postwar main battle tanks, with towed guns and tractors plus trailers alongside them. On a 40 cm hull you can see the texture of cast armour, individual weld beads and the anti-slip finish on mudguards — detail that smaller scales can only hint at.
How to choose a large-scale tank
How much the kit includes
Some boxings cover the exterior only; others add a turret or engine-bay interior. An exterior build is quicker, while full internal detail lets you open the hatches and show the working space inside. Decide what you want on display before you buy.
Space and time
A finished machine needs over 25 cm of shelf depth and hundreds of hours of bench time. Build in sub-assemblies — running gear, hull, turret — and keep parts in a compartment box; with several thousand of them, order pays off twice over. Allow for extra paint as well, since coverage on surfaces this large is several times what smaller scales ask for.
Detail the size can carry
Big scale asks for metal. Look at 1:16 military vehicle tracks with proper pins, 1:16 road wheels, 1:16 turned metal barrels and 1:16 armour photo-etch for grilles and fittings.
