The figure represents a Czechoslovak soldier of the 29th Infantry Regiment attached to a defense battalion of the Straz obrany statu, the State Defense Guard. That armed corps was set up in the second half of the 1930s to protect the state border, and alongside the gendarmerie, the police and the financial guard it also took in army detachments from the infantry regiments as reinforcement. It is exactly this attachment that sets the figure apart from ordinary army figures, because it combines a soldier of a line infantry regiment with border service.
The soldier is caught firing from a kneeling position, the stance a rifleman takes when he needs a steady rest and yet wants to stay mobile. The 1:16 scale is one of the large ones: an adult figure in it stands about eleven centimeters tall, so the folds of the cloth, the equipment and the expression of the face all come out. The figure therefore holds its own on a base in a display case.
Cut the excess material and the marks from production off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder with a fine paper. Wash and degrease the surface before painting. At a large scale it pays to build the color up in several thin coats, to underlay the hollows of the folds with a darker glaze and to lighten the raised areas carefully. Leave the face and the hands until last; skin takes the most work and decides the overall impression. The particular assembly sequence and the recommended shades are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
