1:16 German Tropical Pith Helmet is an accessory for figures in the large 1:16 scale: a German tropical helmet with which the original headgear can be replaced.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not a figure or a model, but a separate piece of headgear meant to complete or replace the one on a figure that already exists. The large 1:16 scale allows the shape of the brim, the edging and the fastening to be worked out considerably more precisely than would be possible in small scales, so the accessory finds a use even on competition-painted figures. Firma49 makes the same accessory in several scales and this is the largest of them.
The tropical helmet was headgear meant for a hot climate. The light construction with a wide brim shaded the face and the neck, and its airiness reduced the heat load during service in the sun. German units wore it in the North African and Mediterranean theaters in the Second World War; in time lighter field caps supplemented and replaced it in practice, because the helmet was more awkward to handle inside the closed spaces of vehicles.
Before fitting it, check how the helmet sits on the crown of the figure's head and slightly adjust the inner outline if need be. The painting is easy, but the result rests on the right tone: sand shades look more convincing when a fine cast of faded color is added on the upper surface and slight soiling on the lower edge. Pick out the metal fittings separately and with restraint. It is a good idea to paint the part before fitting it, because once it is glued on, the inner edge is hard to reach.
