Accessories tend to be the quickest way to turn an ordinary figure into a character of your own. Swapping the headgear or adding a piece of equipment changes the silhouette more than the best painting can, and in a scene with two or three figures it removes the impression that they were all cast from one pattern.
In a large scale every unevenness shows, so sand the surfaces with fine sandpaper before painting, wash them and degrease them. Try the fit of the part on the figure dry and fill any gap with filler before the paint goes on.
