1:16 Russian tank T-34/85 63th Guard Reg. LEMBITU

Markings for a model of the T-34/85

The sheet brings decals with markings for a model of the T-34/85 tank at the large 1:16 scale. It complements or replaces the markings from the kit and comes in useful where the original sheet has yellowed or cracked. The markings are prepared for one particular machine, which carried the name Lembitu. How many markings the sheet contains and where on the vehicle they belong is given by the enclosed instructions.

The real subject

The T-34/85 is the late version of the Soviet medium tank of the Second World War. Against the older machines it received a larger three-man turret and an 85 mm gun, so the commander stopped serving the weapon and could devote himself to commanding. The combination of sloped armor, wide tracks and simple construction made it one of the most widespread tanks of the conflict. At a size of 1:16 the model is as big as a small suitcase, so the markings on the turret and the hull form a striking part of the overall impression and a crudely applied decal shows on them at once.

How to apply the decals

• go over the area under the decal with gloss varnish, as on matte paint the edges turn white
• cut the marking out as close as possible and soak it in lukewarm water until it releases from the backing
• slide the decal onto the model and straighten the position with a brush while the carrier is damp
• draw the excess water off with a soft cloth and let it dry without shifting it
• a softener will help the marking settle onto rivets, eyes and the rough surface of the hull
• fix the finished markings with matte varnish, so that the sheen of the carrier disappears
