About product

The Soviet helmet SSh-39/40 in 1:16 scale

An accessory for a figure in the large 1:16 scale. You get the helmet on its own, which you fit onto a figure's head, or leave lying in a diorama beside it. It is neither a model nor a figure, only a small part with which a figure's headgear can be replaced and a small prop added to a scene.

The real subject

The designation SSh-39/40 covers a pair of successive Soviet steel helmets with a characteristic smooth domed shell, a slightly drawn-out nape and beveled edges. The outer shape of the two forms is practically identical; they differ mainly in the solution of the inner liner and in the related number and placement of the rivets on the shell. The later form was produced in large numbers and stayed in service long after the Second World War as well.

Fitting, cleaning up and painting

Cut the casting residue off with a fine saw, sand the surface down and wash the casting in lukewarm water with a detergent, so that it is rid of the release agent. Once dry, glue with super glue and go over the surface with a primer. In 1:16 scale the smooth shell has nowhere to hide mistakes, so look it over against the light before painting and even any grooves or bubbles out with compound and sand them over. The painting rests on a base shade, fine shading from above and a transition into shadow at the edge. Put a wash at the rivets and under the rim, and draw the edge out carefully with a dry brush. Paint the chin strap and the inner liner separately. Finally a matte varnish, and possibly fine scuffs on the exposed places.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of 1:16 figures of the period of the Second World War and later years
  • Dioramas where a helmet is meant to lie loose away from a figure
  • Conversions and the replacement of the original helmet from a kit
  • Modelers who want to practice shading a smooth metal surface

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a figure. Glue, paints and the figure are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No, it is the helmet alone as an accessory. You obtain the figure separately.

The outer shape is practically identical; the difference lies mainly in the inner liner and in the number and placement of the rivets on the shell.

After the primer, shade the base shade from top to bottom, put a wash at the rivets and under the rim and draw the edge out gently with a dry brush.

With super glue. On a larger mating surface a gel variant works better, because it allows the part to be seated for a while.
