The StuG III is an assault gun built on the chassis of the Panzer III tank. It has no rotating turret; the weapon is mounted in a fixed boxy superstructure, which gives it a low silhouette and a characteristic angular shape. For a modeler the point is that the large flat surfaces of the superstructure and the side plates are a rewarding base for decals, and in 1:16 scale the markings stand out well on them.
A decal needs gloss beneath it, but the finished model is not supposed to be glossy. Once it is dry, therefore, spray the area with a matte or semi-gloss varnish: the coat seals the edge of the film, unifies the sheen with the rest of the paintwork and prepares the surface for pigments and dust effects. Spray in thin coats and from a steady distance; a heavy coat of matte over a large area lightens the shade and can leave a white veil. The decal must be perfectly dry before the coat, otherwise it will ripple under the varnish. Only a matted surface takes the patina, as otherwise pigment rubs off the smooth film unevenly.
