A photo-etched instrument panel for the older Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX kit from Kovozavody Prostejov in 1:72 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mk.IX came about as a quick answer to the Focke-Wulf Fw 190A, which in the spring of 1942 outclassed everything the Royal Air Force was fielding over the Channel. The solution was the Merlin with a two-stage two-speed supercharger, set into the strengthened airframe of the fifth version. The machine thereby regained the advantage at high altitude and became one of the most numerous variants of the whole family; it served from Britain through the Mediterranean all the way to the Czechoslovak units.
The photo-etched fret replaces a panel that in the older kit is suggested only by shallow relief or by a decal. The fret carries etched instrument bezels as well as the small controls that simply cannot be molded in injected plastic at this scale.
The part is separated from its fret with a blade resting on a glass board, not by twisting, or it will bend. Then comes a matte black base, a drop of gloss varnish in the recesses to imitate the glass of the dials, and finally dry brushing, which picks out the bezels. Anyone who wants to go further can back the panel with a piece of clear plastic with printed dials and so obtain instruments you can really see into even with the canopy closed over the cockpit.
