Etched instrument panel H.P. Halifax 1:72 (MH models)

A photo-etched detail accessory from the manufacturer MH models (formerly Modell-Hobby) for models of the Handley Page Halifax in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit but a replacement for the instrument panel: the set contains etched metal parts and a transparent film with printed dials, which are inserted behind the etched metal. The result is a three-dimensional, legible panel of a kind that a flat plastic part from a kit cannot offer.

The real subject

The Handley Page Halifax was a British four-engine heavy bomber of the Second World War. Together with the Lancaster it formed the backbone of the night bomber force of the British command, and it was also used for towing gliders, for reconnaissance and for special duties. The instrument panel of a multi-crew bomber is richly populated and in model form contributes markedly to the impression of the pilot's station.

Fitting and painting

• Remove the original panel from the kit or sand it down flat.
• Separate the parts from the fret with a sharp knife on a hard surface.
• Insert the film with the dials behind the etched panel and fix the joints with super glue or glue for clear plastic.
• Degrease the metal parts, apply a primer and paint; the dials can be picked out with a dry brush.
