A photo-etched instrument panel for a model of the MiG-3 in 1:72 scale. The photo-etching is documented by the name itself: the parts are etched from a thin metal sheet, so they have sharp edges and a thickness correct to scale, which cannot be achieved with an injection-molded part. The set is cut for the kit from Maquette, formerly carried as Modell-Hobby and abbreviated to MQT.
The MiG-3 was a Soviet single-seat fighter from the start of the Second World War, a machine with a long nose and a fairly tight cockpit. That is exactly why, once the model is finished, the eye looks at the instrument panel through the glazing at a sharp angle, and a coarsely rendered panel is more visible on the finished model than one would expect.
The parts are held on a thin carrier sheet; separate them with a sharp blade on a hard surface rather than by twisting, otherwise they will bend. Level the remainder of the tab with a fine file after separation. The original panel from the kit usually has to be sanded away smooth, so that the new one sits at the right depth. Photo-etched parts are bonded with super glue, which you apply in a tiny amount on the tip of a toothpick rather than straight from the bottle. Degrease the parts before painting and apply a thin coat of primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth metal. The manufacturer's instructions give the scope of the set and the recommended procedure.
The kit, paints and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
