A photo-etched metal refinement of the cockpit of the catapult-launched Vought OS2U Kingfisher floatplane, 1:72 scale, for the Airfix kit.

The battleships and cruisers of the American fleet needed eyes far beyond the horizon. That work was done by a light floatplane monoplane from Vought, which was launched from the ship by a powder catapult and, once the task was over, settled onto the slick of calm water created by the ship's own maneuver. A crane then hoisted it back aboard. A version with wheels for shore bases also existed.
Besides spotting for naval gunfire, the machines proved themselves in search and rescue work. More than once they landed in the open sea beside survivors they could not take inside, and so they carried them lashed to the wings and taxied tens of kilometers across the water to the nearest ship. A structure with a spot-welded skin and flaps supplemented by drooping ailerons allowed a landing at a remarkably low speed.
Thin metal carries remains of production chemicals on its surface which prevent adhesion. A short bath in alcohol or a wipe with mineral spirits solves the problem. Only a degreased part will take a primer and glue the way it should.
Color markings for distinguishing ships and squadrons are simple and large in area, so it is worth cutting them out and spraying them. Warning texts beside the float and placards with weight data, by contrast, have no counterpart in masking technique and only printing will deal with them. The boundary between the two techniques runs where a shape becomes lettering.
