1:35 Modern Military Defence Gabion

Modern Military Defence Gabion in 1:35 scale from Gecko Models

The set belongs among accessories for dioramas in 1:35 scale. It is not a vehicle model or figures but an element of a scene: a modern defensive gabion, that is a basket filled with earth or gravel of the kind used to protect positions, checkpoints and field bases. In a display case it gives vehicles and figures a setting and at the same time a scale comparison.

What a gabion is good for on a diorama

Gabions are a typical element of contemporary field positions. On a diorama they are used to build protective walls around a position, revetments for trenches and parapets, or to mark out a passage between structures. Because it is a stand-alone object of the scene, the arrangement can be put together as needed and completed with terrain, sand and small material.

Building and painting tips

First rid the parts of burrs and try the assembly dry, so that it fits the planned scene. Spray the base with primer and only then with paint. The fill of the gabion looks better if you fine-tune it after painting with dry brushing and pigments; the mesh, on the other hand, takes a darker tone and light rubbing on the edges. Close off the transition between the gabion and the terrain with modeling compound or sand, so that the object does not look merely stood on a board.
