A modeling aid for building dioramas from the manufacturer U-STAR. The roller carries a camouflage pattern around its circumference. As it passes over a surface the motif repeats by itself, so the laborious and hard-to-repeat drawing of irregular patches one by one is done away with. It is not paint or a compound but a tool that transfers a pattern.
What decides is even pressure and a smooth movement in one direction. An interrupted movement, or pressure changed in the middle of a pass, gives a pattern that comes out sharp at one end and bled at the other. Before you set about a model or a scene, always make a test pass on an offcut. On it you will check not only the pressure but also how dense a pattern suits you visually.
A regularly repeating motif is both the roller's greatest strength and its greatest pitfall. If you keep going in the same direction and from the same edge, the repetition starts to show on a larger surface and the result looks mechanical. It helps to change the direction of the passes, to turn the surface slightly and to overlap the individual strips. Clean the roller after finishing, before anything dries on it, otherwise the relief of the pattern gets clogged and the impression loses its sharpness.
