Stippling instead of strokes
Anyone who applies a pigment with a stroke of the brush, like paint, gets stripes. Stippling gives a more believable result: hold the brush square to the surface and tap it briefly and repeatedly with the tip. The powder settles in small irregular clusters that merge from a distance into an uneven surface. It is precisely that irregularity that tells good weathering apart from an even coat.
An older brush with harder, shortened bristles that can no longer be painted with is ideal for this. New soft brushes bend when tapped and rather spread the powder about. Work in small areas and between them put the model down and look at it from a distance. Close up the individual clusters look coarse, even though from the ordinary viewing distance they read as natural.
For modelers bothered by their weathering looking like an even coat. Stippling is the simplest way of getting randomness into a surface, and you need nothing for it but the pigment and a written-off brush.
A loose powder: do not inhale it, work over a surface and out of a draft, and wash your hands after work. Keep out of the reach of children.
