Working completely dry
Besides ordinary application with a brush there is also a dry technique in which the powder is not only dusted onto a surface but rubbed in. You rub the pigment you have taken up into the surface with a circular movement, using a finger, a piece of foam or a firmer cotton bud. On edges, rivets, panel joints and all raised places more material settles than on a flat area, so the relief of the model stands out and the surface stops reading as flat.
This technique is sensitive to pressure. Light pressure leaves only a faint veil, heavy pressure creates a continuous and markedly darker deposit. Try both on an offcut of sprue painted with the same paint as the model, so that you know how the pigment behaves on your particular surface. Grease from your fingers can affect the result, so wash and dry your hands before work, or use a glove.
For modelers who want to bring out the relief of a surface with no airbrush and no mixing of paints. Dry work with a pigment calls for no other equipment than a brush and a moment of patience.
A loose powder: do not inhale it, work over a surface and out of a draft when rubbing it in, and wash your hands after work. Keep out of the reach of children.
