The real subject

A model of a car on its own shows only a machine. As soon as a human character is added to it, a scene arises, and a scene can be told: someone is looking the car over, someone is waiting by it, someone is just arriving. Female characters from the world of motor shows and racing paddocks are the most frequently used accessory for that, and in 1:18 scale they have a size at which viewers notice even the small things.

What the figures offer

These are female characters in 1:18 scale meant for finished car models. They come into play in a display case and in a diorama, where it is only the characters that show how big the scene is. When laying a scene out, leave a little room between the car and the character; a character glued tight to the side of the body comes across as unnatural and moreover covers exactly what you want to show.

Building and painting tips

Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder down, then wash and degrease the figures. Choose the glue according to the material of the parts. Run the painting from the top down and start with the skin, because overruns on it show the most. Build the clothing up in thin coats: a saturated base, a darker wash into the folds and a fine lightening of the edges where the fabric lies against the body. Leave the hair until the end and add lighter strands to it, otherwise it looks like a uniform cap. Anchor the figure to a base with a pin of wire that you drill into the foot; a glued joint alone will not last long on a small contact area.
