A plastic kit of the Czechoslovak fighter Avia S-199 in the version with the Erla type canopy, 1:72 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Avia S-199 was created in postwar Czechoslovakia from unfinished Messerschmitt Bf 109 G airframes. The original fighter engine was no longer available, so the machine received a Jumo 211 V12 engine, originally meant for bombers, and a broad propeller to go with it. The combination of a heavy engine and a massive propeller blade gave the aircraft a strong pitching moment and a reputation as a machine that forgives little. Among the pilots the nickname Mezek, meaning mule, became established for it. In 1948 the S-199 became the first fighter type of the Israeli Air Force.
Erla is the name of the shape of canopy that replaced the older, heavily framed cover. It has fewer frames and a cleaner shape, so the view out of the cockpit is considerably better. This version appeared on the S-199 alongside the older form and it is the main recognition feature by which a particular machine is identified.
The cockpit can be seen on this subject, so it pays to do the work on the seat and the side walls before the fuselage is glued together for good. The clear canopy is glued on at the end, with a glue meant for clear parts, so that the surface does not cloud over. Mask the frames of the canopy before spraying, not once the paint has dried. Before gluing, free the parts of surplus material and traces of manufacture and sand the mating surfaces.
The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue, filler and a masking set are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
