An injection-molded plastic kit of the twin-engined long-range Boeing 787-8 airliner in the colors of the Japanese carrier ANA (All Nippon Airways), in 1:200 scale from Hasegawa. The 1:200 scale is the standard for airliner models — it offers a sensible compromise between the size of the model and the legibility of the detail. The set holds the parts for the airframe, the engine nacelles, the landing gear, a decal sheet with the carrier's livery and instructions. The model is usually built with the landing gear extended, or on a stand in a flying attitude.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a modern twin-engined long-range airliner whose airframe is largely made of composite materials. That is precisely what made it possible to reduce weight, raise the cabin pressure and use larger windows than on older types. The 787-8 version is the basic and shortest variant of the family. The Japanese carrier ANA was the first customer for the type and began commercial operations with it in 2011, so it is historically the most strongly linked with the aircraft. Recognition features of the aircraft are the wings with a pronounced upward flex under load and the characteristic serrated trailing edges of the engine nacelles, which reduce noise.
Airliner models stand or fall on a smooth surface — every imperfect seam shows on a light finish. Fill the joints of the fuselage and the leading edges carefully, sand them with fine paper and polish the surface. The base consists of a continuous white or light finish, which calls for a good primer and several thin coats; one heavy coat will certainly bring out the flaws. Apply a gloss clear coat before the decals so that the large areas do not silver, and use a decal softener. Deal with the metal areas of the engine nacelles and the trailing edges of the wings in metallic shades applied at the very end — they are harder to overspray and to mask. Paint the landing gear bays and the wheels separately before assembly.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
