The package holds five plastic kits of the American carrier dive bomber Douglas SBD Dauntless in 1:200 scale. They are released by Trumpeter and supplied unassembled and unpainted. The set is aimed mainly at builders of aircraft carrier models in 1:200 scale, for whom it fills the flight deck and the parking areas.
The Dauntless was a two-seat carrier dive bomber with fixed landing gear in aerodynamic fairings and with the characteristic perforated dive brakes on the trailing edge of the wing. It was precisely the perforation of the brakes that reduced buffeting in a dive, and it is the most conspicuous recognition feature of the type. It entered service at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s, and in the first years of the war in the Pacific it was the main striking weapon of the American carriers against surface targets. The second crew member worked the flexible defensive armament and handled navigation and communication. The aircraft was valued for its accuracy in a dive attack and for the toughness of its structure, even though its performance was modest by the standards of the time. It served with land-based units as well and in the later phase of the war the Helldiver replaced it.
The parts are very small in 1:200 scale, so use a sharp knife to separate them and sand the gate remnants away with a fine file. Fit the fairings of the fixed landing gear symmetrically, because they are clearly visible on this type. Lay the paint down with an airbrush in thin coats, so that the surface detail is preserved. The glazing of the long canopy can simply be suggested with a light shade and a fine brush. On the deck of a ship model a combination of aircraft spread over the parking spots and one ready for takeoff works well, and it suits that to suggest chocks under the wheels and tie-downs with a fine fiber.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
